We examined 393 mine cutters and 187 drillers working at charcoal mines. Simple pneumoconiosis showed similar rates in both groups. Pulmonary massive fibrosis (FMP) appeared however more common among drillers, which were at risk of developing some form of pneumoconiosis after a number of working years that was almost half of that needed by the other group (p<0.05). Miners (either cutters or drillers) with FMP were older than those induded in other categories. However, no difference was found in the total numbers of working years (p<0.05). No relationship was found between the spreading of small-sized opacities (round and irregular in shape) and the number of working years (total or in several jobs), which reflects the variability within the same type of job and the lack of accuracy of radiological exams in the assessment/diagnosis of pneumoconiosis. When performing epidemiological studies it is necessary to differentiate between cutters and drillers since they have different risks and patterns of pneumoconiosis.
