Ninety-eight consecutive patients with bronchogenic carcinoma were assessed and treated according to the same protocol. Histologically were 62 squamous carcinomas (63%), 22 adenocardnomas (22%), 13 large cell carcinomas (13%) and 1 radiac necrosis (1%). The surgical treatment was 55 lobectomies, 13 pneumonectomies, 7 wall resections and 23 exploratory thoracotomies. Survival was evaluated according to the age of the patients, the histological typing of the tumours, the several surgical approaches and the tumoral extension.

No significant difference related to the age of the patients was found. Differences were found however in relation to the histological typing of the tumour.

The survival of the patients did not differ among the several surgical approaches. Nevertheless, significantly different survivals according to the stage of tumoral extension were found among patients in which a lobectomy was performed because of squamous carcinoma.
