28 samples of original sputum from the four es-tablished STB types were analyzed. For rheological study a previously standardized «capillary viscosimetry» sys-tem (Rheomatic-Viskosimeter-Moleculex) was used. Without previous physical manipulation of fresh sputum, rheological curves obtained from the variables shear rate versus shear stress faithfully reflected the hete-rogeneous character of STB. This heterogeneous behaviour of the original specimen is the fundamental mecha-nism whereby its main rheological features are masked. After a procedure of transcapillary lamination in diffe-rent states of stress, mensurable rheograms were obtained representing a homogeneous non-newtonian fluid profile. This phenomenon was more marked as the she-aring was greater. Under these physical conditions, the range of rheological behaviour of several biological samples classified as «mucopurulent» and «purulent» approached newtonian fluids for (G = 25—90 s–1).

Apparent viscosity (G = 25 s–1) of original sputum was compared; after physical manipulation with a lamination procedure, a comparison between results was carried out.
