Tissue volume (Vt) and pulmonary flow were determined using rebreathing and mass spirometry in four individuals who were tested under different conditions and with different gasses (C2H2; DME and CO18). Evaluations were done with four methods and at different intervals. Low cost european material was used and adapted. Results are in agreement with those of other authors using conventional Vt measurement methods without the ventilation level influencing results althoug alveolar volume at the start of the test did influence findings. DME values were slightly lower that C2H2 values.

There was marked correlation between pulmonary flow measured with different methods and the level of frequency or ventilation at which determinations were done. Petrini et al.’s method is recommended for studies of this type, both because its easier to calculate and can be done at lower frequency.
