Bronchoplastic techniques have added a new dimension to thoracic surgery in the treatment of bening and maling processes and are particularly beneficial when preservation of functional pulmonary parenchyma is required. Survival rates after 5 years range between 10% and 40%. These percentages are comparable to those obtained with conventional lobectomies and pneumectomies. Operative mortality is below 9% except, perhaps, for cases in stage III with invasion of the tracheal carina in whom intraoperative mortality and longterm survival rates differ among the different authors.
