Summary

The authors study two groups of young people: one group of diabetics (n = 10) and one group of normal subjects (n = 8). The pulmonary volumes and conductance as well as air flows are equal in both groups.

Only the pulmonary mechanical parameters were abnormal, specifically the pressure of medium inflation and the Pst/V curve.

The use of Vmax instead of TLC in the representation of the pressure-volume curves is convenient in order to obviate factors not directly tied to pulmonary elasticity.

The results suggest that the lung of the juvenile diabetics is elastically different from that of normal subjects of the same age.
