Determination of the pulmonary pressure-volume relationships with the super-syringe technique is carried out by insuflation of known-volumes of air with simultaneous recording of the change in intrapulmonary pressure thus generated. Measurements are made in static conditions during inflation and deflation of the patient's lung departing from functional residual capacity up to total lung capacity.

The shape of the pressure-volume loop informs about the lung elastic properties in a given time and allows the optimization of mechanical ventilation in patients with acute respiratory failure.
