Summary

The volume-maximal static inspiratory pressure (V/PImax) relation was determined in 18 subjects (4 normal ones; 7 with mechanical thoracic restrictive disease; 7 with different neuromyopathies affecting the respiratiry muscles). The normal subjects were also studied after thoracic atrapping at RV level; PImax decreased at FRC level after strapping and proportionally to the loss of volume. Findings for the subjects with mechanical restriction were similar to those for the normal subjects after strapping. The subjects with neuromyopathies presented a PImex (FRC) affectation comparatively higher than the loss in volume.

PImax (FRC) adjusted to TLC:

PImax (FRC)c = PImax theoretical TLC/true TLC; allows a clearer recognition of patients with restrictive ventilatory neuropathy, than do volume alterations or absolute PImax (FRC).
