Thirty five patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) admitted to hospital due to several reasons related to COPD were studied using a nutritional assessment protocol. At least one nutritional deficiency was found in 88% of the patients. Marasmus was the most common form of malnutrition among our patients (71%). The most reliable nutritional parameters were the creatinine/height ratio (ICT), the tricipital cutaneous fold (PCT), the mean brachial muscular perimeter (CMMB) and the mean brachial perimeter (CMB). A correlation was found between anthropometric parameters related to muscular mass (CMMB and CMB) and forced vital capacity (FVC) and PaCO2 (p<0.05) as pulmonary function indexes. The malnutrition-respiratory failure interaction is discussed while assessing the usefulness of every parameter used in our study.
