To assess the efficacy of ipratropium bromide (IB) to prevent the nocturnal fall in peak flow in patients with asthma, a crossover, double blind study between ipratropium and placebo was undertaken. We included 19 asthmatic patients with an early morning fall in respiratory flow who were in a stable clinical condition. During two periods of 15 days they were randomized into IB 200mcg every 8 hours with an inhaler device or placebo. Simple spirometry with bronchodilatador test was performed before treatment and at the end of each period of treatment. Our results indicate that IB significantly improves the mean peak flow by ameliorating the minimun peak flow. We conclude that IB reduces significantly the degree of obstruction.
