The use of the forced vital capacity in the study of bronchial obstruction in pacients with chronic air flow limitation introduces, according to our results, errors in the measurement of the degree of severity of the disease.

The forced vital capacity undervalues the real pulmonary volume that exists between the total pulmonary capacity and the residual volume.

We favour the use of the slow inspiratory vital capacity.
