Summary

In coal workers simple pneumoconiosis produces a slight decrease of PaO2 at rest which is usually corrected during exercise.

In progressive massive fibrosis the defect of exchange of O2 is more severe, with a moderate decrease of PaO2 at rest but which is aggravated by exercise. It is probable that an important determining factor of this decrease be the decline of capacity of pulmonary diffusion presented by these patients, although one cannot exclude the possibility that a certain degree of ventilation/perfusion imbalance aiso contributed to this decrease.
