We present the diagnostic yielding of fiberoptic bronchoscopy in 150 cases of lung cancer during 1986, and compare it with that of the previous 6 years to assess the repercusion that might have the experience in such technique. In the cases with visible endobronchial tumor, the yielding is 100% (biopsy and brushing), a 6% higher than that in 1980. In the cases of apparently normal bronchofiberscopy study, the yielding also increased in 15%, being 86% (biopsy plus brushing). In both groups, the yielding of biopsy was higher than that of bronchial brushing.

In the cases labeled as showing “indirect signs”, the efficacy of the biopsy was also higher than that in 1980; however, the efficacy of brushing decreased, which had a repercusion in the overall yielding of the exploration, being similar in both periods of time (92% in 1980 and 90% in 1986). The citology of the aspirated material alone was not diagnostic in any one case.

A marked increase in the yielding of biopsy is observed, which may be related to the experience of the technician.
