The results of a population-based case-control study in the Community of Cantabria analyzing the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and pulmonary tuberculosis are discussed in this article. Results show a progressive increase in tuberculosis risk with decreasing BMI. This trend is maintained even when controlling socio-economic level by means of stratified analysis, and also when simultaneously controlling heavy alcohol consumption, prior gastrectomy and BCG vaccination by means of logistic regression analysis. These results support the conclusions of recent foreign studies that recommended chemoprophylaxis for those subjects with a positive tuberculin test and a BMI 15% or more under the aritmethic mean, independently of age.
