En este trabajo se analiza la respuesta de 15 sujetos normales en términos de ventilación, cambios del patrón respiratorio y P0,1 ante la estimulación con concentraciones progresivamente crecientes de CO2 en estado estable entre el 1 y 4%, encontrando dos fases en la respuesta: una primera hasta el 3% en la que sólo se observa un aumento progresivo del volumen minuto a expensas del volumen circulante, y una segunda fase, del 3 al 4%, en la que encontramos un aumento muy superior de VE y VT junto a un alargamiento del tiempo inspiratorio sin que se observe ningún cambio en la duración del ciclo (Ttot) ni, por tanto, en la frecuencia. De esta forma podemos afirmar que se puede detectar respuesta al CO2 ya con concentraciones inspiratorias muy bajas y que dicha respuesta parece seguir una secuencia de hechos perfectamente establecida en la que el aumento de la frecuencia respiratoria ocuparía el último lugar, al menos en personas normales.

The results are reported for a study in which the response of 15 individuals with normal ventilation were analyzed for changes in the respiratory pattern and P0,1 after stimulation with progressively increasing concentrations of CO2 stabilized between 1 and 4%. Two phases were found in the responses: a first one with up to 3% in which there was only a Progressive increase in minue volume over the circulating volume and a second phase at from 3 to 4% in which there was an considerable increase in VE and VT together with lengthening of the inspiratory time without any change seen in the length of the cycle (Ttot) and thus in the frequency. These results indicate that a response to CO2, may be detected even at very low inspiratory concentrations and that this response appears to follow a perfectly defined sequence in which the increase in respiratory frequency occurs in last place, at least in the case of normal individuals.
