Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the mediastinum proved a highly accurate diagnostic technique independent of the type of lesions or their localization.
The authors report their experience with 37 patients with mediastinal masses in whom the technique was used. The procedure was successful in 30 patients (81.1%) while in six patients (16.2%) no cytological diagnosis was obtained. It is noteworthy that in 19 patients (51.3%) a diagnosis of bronchogenic carcinoma was obtained.
The efficacy of the procedure is compared to that of other diagnostic techniques and the indications and complications discussed.
