Summary

The diagnostic findings, based on histologic and bacteriologic studies for sixty-four cases tuberculous pleurisy with effusion are described.

The more striking characteristics were: young people were most often affected; the most common finding was exúdate with predominantly lymphocytes and few mesothelial or eosinophilic cells; and a positive 5UT-PPD tuberculin test.

The usefulness of a combination of the different diagnostic procedures is discussed and diagnostic aims are recommended.
