The authors propose a multidisciplinary treatment for small cell lung cancer which includes surgery in nonadvanced stages. This proposal is based on one hand, on anecdotal observations with good results after pnlmonary resection, and on the other hand, on the favourable response to chemotherapy, eventhough local relapse is frequent. After reviewing the encouraging results obtained by other authors with a multidisciplinary approach, we conclude that the diagnosis of microcytic pulmonary carcinoma does not represent necessarily a dead loss. The tumor stage has to be determined accurately, and surgery associated with chemotherapy should be envisaged in stages Ia and IIIa.
