Obesity is an endocrine and metabolic abnormality which is associated with several both somatic and psychological complications. We report a series of seven patients with extreme obesity, without respiratory disease and with normocapnia. Their respiratory function is discussed with special emphasis on the ventilatory pattern. As a remarkable finding there was an increased central inspiratory drive with normality of the other ventilatory pattern parameters, probably owing to the good performance of the respiratory muscles in our patients.
