Summary

The tensoactive properties as well as the Biochemical composition of the pulmonary surfactant obtained by washlung in nine mongrel dogs, before and after papain-induced panlobulillar experimental emphysema was obtained, are studied. A relationship between the two advocated theories for the production of emphysema is tried to establish: a) The diminution of surface tension of pulmonary surfactant and b) The abnormal intrapulmonary proteic digestion secundary to a diminution of the inhibition of the proteases liberated by the lung by various mechanisms. The results suggest that in the genesis of emphysema the increase of the intrapulmonary proteolysis, as well as the alteration of the tensoactivity of the surfactant could play an important role. Possibly the latter fact is secondary to the former one, but in a different way as it is considered at present.
