In order to know the prevalence of chronic respiratory disease, we studied 93 out of 95 subjectes aged 20 to 70 years who reside in the rural village of Larraul in Guipúzcoa. We used a questionaire in order to obtain information about per sonal history, respiratory symptoms, as well as knowledge of certain risk factors. We measured CO in expirated air, CV, and FEV1. The index of smokers was low (32.3% in males and 10.7% in females) and among smokers, tobacco consump-tion was moderate. Prevalence of chronic bronchitis (8.6% with confidence intervals ranging 4.3 to 18.1%) and chronic obstruction to the air flow (17.1% with confidence intervals between 9.7 to 27%) significantly increased with age. FEV1/CV % index was significantly lower in smokers and in pa-tients with chronic bronchitis. We did not find association between hay manipulation and chronic bronchitis nor with alterations in functional tests.
