The preventive efect of nifedipine on metacholine induced bronchoconstriction was studied in eight asthmatic patients. Before the start of the study all patients underwent a metacholine challenge test which resulted in a 20% drop from the baseline value for FEV1. The study was done over two days, with random, double blind administration of 20 mg sublingual nifedipine or placebo. Patients receiving nifedipine showed a significantly smaller reduction (p < 0.01) in the FVC and FEV1, values than did those with placebo or variation in the prophylactic effect of nifedipine between patients.
