In five samples of lung tissue in which asbestos fibers had been identified, a mineralogic analysis by means of surface electron microscopy and energy dispersion analysis, which are techniques whose sensitivity and specificity are, higher than those of light microscope, were carried out. In three of such samples, a diagnosis of asbestosis has been established by means of light and polarizing microscope study. All samples contained uncountable amounts of asbestos fibers, and in two of them, there were also uncountable amounts of non fibrous silicate particles, thus being diagnosed of silicoasbestosis. The two remaining samples had been previously diagnosed of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Uncountable asbestos fibers had been identified in the two samples.

Surface electron microscope study and energy dispersion analysis may be useful in diagnosing asbestosis because they are mineralogic techniques non destructive and easily reprodudble.
