We report an occupational hygienic study carried out in a hard metal factory. The purpose was to evaluate the prevalence of respiratory disorders associated with hard metal expossure. We measured environmental cobalt levels and obtained clinical histories, functional respiratory tests and bronchial challenge tests in 65 workers (72% of the total work force). We found occupational asthma in 4 (6,1%). Three workers showed abnormal radiographs with profusion ≥ 1/1 without clinical-functional correlation. One asymptomatic worker with normal X-ray showed a restrictive syndrome and decreased carbon monoxide diffusion. On the other hand, 7 workers showed airways obstruction related to smoking habit in 6 of them and to non occupational bronchial asthma in the other one.
