Home High-Flow Oxygen Therapy Should Be Considered in Patients With COPD and Chronic Respiratory Failure
2023, Archivos de BronconeumologiaAlkali Therapy for Respiratory Acidosis: A Medical Controversy
2020, American Journal of Kidney DiseasesCitation Excerpt :A special case of such mixed disorder is severe asthma exacerbation resistant to conventional therapy.44,45 In these patients, alkali therapy can result in marked improvement of respiratory distress and a substantial decrease in Paco2.46-50 Alternative measures can cause serious complications (eg, aggravation of lactic acidosis with escalation of β-adrenergic agonists, and pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum with mechanical ventilation).
Life-threatening asthma in children: Treatment with sodium bicarbonate reduces P<inf>CO2</inf>
2005, ChestCitation Excerpt :Acidosis produces myocardial depression, reduces the effectiveness of β-agonists, and may stimulate ineffective rapid, shallow ventilation. Therefore, it has been postulated in previous reports3–8 that correction of acidemia by sodium bicarbonate can relieve bronchospasm and restore the response to bronchodilators in patients with LTA. In most reports3,4,6–8 on the use of sodium bicarbonate in treatment of LTA, sodium bicarbonate is administered before intubation and mechanical ventilation.
