The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility of the measurement of sensation of dysnea during effort in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Eighteen patients with stabilized chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were studied by carrying out a progressive and maximum effort test on a treadmill measuring the sensation of effort by the modified Borg scale. To confirm the reproducibility of the test in this type of patients and the scale used to quantify the dysnea, the exercise was repeated under identical conditions with a margin of ten days. The sensation of dysnea during the effort was strictly correlated with the principal physiologic parameters of exercise. The variation coefficient of these parametes between the two efforts was small, being 4.5% for the minute volume (VEmax); 2.78% for the consumption of oxygen (VO2 max); 4.4% for carbon production (VCO2 max); 3% for heart rate (HRmax) and 2.75% for inspiratory pressure measured in the mouth (PI max). Likewise, the variations of sensation of dysnea were slight, presenting a variation coefficient between 0 and 6.2% according to the minutes of exercise performed. The authors conclude affirming that the intensity of the sensation of effort may be evaluated using a conventional scale and its reproducibility is good and is similar to that of other physiologic exercise parameters.
