To assess the prevalence of farmer's lung (FL), 82 farmers from a Guipuzcoa village were evaluated. The following studies were performed in all: 1) Questionnaire; 2) Precipitin (P) study with hay extract (H), Mycropolyspora faeni (MF), Termoactinomyces vulgaris (TV), Aspergillus fumigatus (AF), Penicillium frequentans (PF), and Aureobasidium pullulans, and 3) Skin testing (ST) with H and MF. In addition, chest X-ray and spirometric study were carried out in those with history suggesting FL or positive P.

Only one patient with FL was detected, and 24,6% of individuals were seropositive. Although Ps against MF were the most commonly found, there was a significant number of positive Ps for TV and particularly for AF. Frequently, more than one P was found among seropositives (mean 2,5), and also Ps against mycotic agents not related to FL (PF and AP). The relationship P-sex was statistically significant. There was a poor correlation between clinical findings and both P and ST. ST and P behaved like independent tests.
