Summary

Pneumonía due to [3-hemolitic streptococcal infections is at present a rare finding, especially in children.

The authors present 3 children with pleuropneumonia; with Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus equisimilis as the causal agents. Two of the children presented associated acute renal insufficiency with hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia; both clinically and anatomicopathologically compatible with hemolytic-uremic syndrome. The third child developed septic shockand died within a few hours after admission. A review of the more significant clinical features is included, and the need for identification of the organism through precise and sensitive diagnostic procedures is underlined.
