To evaluate the changes in ventilation during the menstural cycle we investigated the resting ventilatory indexes in 11 females in fertile age and with normal menstrual cycles. A mild increase in ventilation (p < 0,05) during luteinic phase was found. It was due to the summation, in a small degree, of nonsignificant changes of the respiratory pattern with the probable increase in neural drive and the very slight increase in VT, a decrease in expiratory time and end-expiratory pause, and an increase in the inspiratory time/total time ratio. These changes were not correlated with the progesterone plasma levels.
