Resumen

La repercusión que la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica tiene sobre los pacientes y su percepción de bienestar no se limita a las alteraciones funcionales respiratorias. La fatiga, el estado de ánimo y alteraciones del sueño constituyen un cuadro de complejas interrelaciones que inciden en la percepción del estado de salud. La fatiga es un síntoma de extrema importancia por su frecuencia, su repercusión clínica y sus relaciones con otras manifestaciones. Las alteraciones funcionales durante el sueño son de diverso grado, siendo más importantes con el síndrome de apneas-hipopneas durante el sueño. Las alteraciones en el estado de ánimo son importantes por su frecuencia, su repercusión clínica e importancia pronóstica. En los últimos años se han desarrollado numerosos instrumentos de medida para cuantificar estas manifestaciones, como el LCOPD, el CAFS y el CASIS. El presente trabajo revisa la relevancia clínica de estas manifestaciones y los instrumentos de medida disponibles para su evaluación.

Abstract

The effect of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on patients and their perception of wellbeing goes beyond functional respiratory alterations. Fatigue, mood and sleep alterations constitute a complex of interrelated symptoms affecting perception of health status. Fatigue is a highly important symptom due to its frequency, clinical repercussions and association with other manifestations. Functional alterations during sleep are of various degrees of severity and are most important in sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. Mood alterations are important because of their frequency, clinical repercussion and prognostic implications. In the last few years, several measurement instruments have been developed to quantify these manifestations, such as the Living with COPD scale (LCOPD), the COPD and Asthma Fatigue Scale (CAFS) and the COPD and Asthma Sleep Impact Scale (CASIS).The present article reviews the clinical relevance of these manifestations and the measurement instruments available for their evaluation.
