The authors studied 106 workers of 1,000 in a synthetic fiber mill equiped with an airconditioning Systems with humidifiers. Clinical signs compatible with extrinsic allergic alveolitis were found in (3.6%/l,000 workers) of these, 19 (52.7%) had acute clinical signs and 17 (47.3%) subacute symptoms. The clinical history and challenge test in the work place were found useful diagnostic aids. The intradermal reactions, blood precipitin tests and chest films were not efficacious. Study of the bars and water of the humidifiers revealed the presence of various microorganisms with scant thermophylic actinomycetes.Three years after humidifiers were cleaned a new case of alveolitis was diagnosed.
