Advances in medicine have provided physicians with extremely efficient means of returning patient's health. These resources, however, may be very aggressive for the human organism. Thus, to date, physicians possess great power for decisively intervening in the vital biologic processes of man. These facts have brought about medical activity which may lead to considerable iatrogenic risks for the health of the patient.

Iatrogenia would be equivalent to any effect adverse to the health of the patient, secondary to medical assistance, which on occasions gives rise to legal action. In order for iatrogenia to involve legal responsibility for the physician, the following conditions must exist: imprudent behavior of the physician, the presence of injury to the health of the patient, and the demonstration of a cause relationship between the two previous points. The measures to be taken to avoid such situations are also discussed.
