The diagnostic methods used for a series of 100 patients with bronchial carcinoma were reviewed to determine their usefulness and complications. Sputum cytology was positive in 51% of all cases; fiberoptic bronchoscopy in 78.9% and in 94% when the tumor was visible. Transthoracic puncture with two different type needles —a thick beveled one and a fine one—, was diagnostic in 80%, and in particular in those cases where fiberoptic bronchoscopy was not successful.

Significant complications occurred only with transthoracic puncture with a 27% rate of pneumothorax which did not require surgical drainage in any of the cases.
